ARCH ENEMY "Black Earth" is an aggressive, in your face death metal assault. The band delivers a brutal attack with pounding double-bass drum beats, blazing well distorted guitars, thumping bass and roared guttoral vocals. Don't come looking for laid back love songs and ballads here, you won't find any. ARCH ENEMY throws together some incredibly catchy guitar riffs, time changes and solos that are impressive and make you appreciate their talents as musicians. Surprisingly there's even a brief acoustical interlude and a short instrumental track, showing the bands less aggressive side. The intense pace of the music definitely keeps you banging your head and gives you the urge to slam around and break something! JOHAN LIIVA's vocals are somewhat unintelligeable and bark along repetitively but are a decent fit for the band's extreme metal style. I must mention that the band does a great cover of Iron Maiden's "Aces High" in their own bashing style, which is top notch! The music holds it's own and those who are into the heavier metal spectrum will certainly enjoy pumping their fists to "Black Earth".

Overall, Black Earth is a diverse and likeable release...assuming you are a fan of high speed jamming and barked vocals. Aside from a moment of acoustic guitars and the instrumental ('Time Capsule'), the sound and tempo of the album are pretty consistent. Most aggressive metal fans should find this album to their liking.

The music is definitely intense -the guitarwork of brothers CHRISTOPHER and MICHAEL AMOTT is top notch- combine that with the steady bass of LIIVA and DANIEL ERLANDSSON's frantic skin bashing and you come up with a dynamic metal release. Admittedly I'm not too big a fan of the brutal speed/death metal vocals, so I'd consider that the album's only weakness. I guess if you want the music to be brutal you can't sing like a fairy and be cool, but a few voice lessons wouldn't hurt to inject a little melody into the music. ARCH ENEMY "Black Earth" is a release that extreme metal fans won't want to pass up.
